There will be just one state hosting the Women's Premier League in 2024: Jay Shah

The Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024 auction was a great success, and fans are incredibly excited for the second edition of the event to see their favorite clubs play. The BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) Secretary Jay Shah has disclosed some details about the next edition of the competition, stating that the T20 extravaganza will begin in the second or third week of February 2024.

Jay Shah added that the competition will be held in a single Indian state. Notably, the Brabourne Stadium and the DY Patil Sports Academy were the only two locations in Mumbai where the inaugural WPL was held.

It has been determined that the event will take place in February. We will most likely begin in the second or third week. To improve logistics, the event will only take place in one state in terms of location. This time, logistics are crucial to us; perhaps, we can work out how to have more venues next time,” Jay Shah was cited by ESPNCricinfo.

Speaking further into the future, Jay Shah added that following talks with the franchises, the event will also be held in additional cities.

“We may carry it out in Uttar Pradesh or Bangalore, Karnataka. We have so many locations, including Ahmedabad, Rajkot, and in a few years, Baroda will be able to construct their own stadium in Gujarat. It is essentially a collective call made by the BCCI and the teams. Together, we shall decide when we sit down. We’ll inform you. Without a doubt, it will only be in one state, he continued.

In WPL history, Kashvee Gautam rose to become the most expensive uncapped player.

Thirty players were sold at the massive event of the second edition auction, which saw the five franchises complete their squads. Uncapped Indian spinner Kashvee Gautam and Annabel Sutherland, who were both sold for INR 2 crore to the Gujarat Giants and Delhi Capitals, respectively, were tied for the most expensive player of the auction.

In addition to them, Vrinda Dinesh, an uncapped Indian player, was also sold to UP Warriorz for an incredible 1.30 crore. But, Phoebe Litchfield was sold to Gujarat Giants for INR 1 crore, and veteran South African bowler Shabnim Ismail was acquired by the reigning champion Mumbai Indians for INR 1.20 crore.
