Gujarat Titans captain Hardik Pandya was moved to the five-time champion Mumbai Indians in an all-cash deal, which caused quite a stir ahead of the 17th Indian Premier League (IPL) auction. Not only will the bold move strengthen MI’s lineup, but it may also elevate them back to the status of legitimate title contenders. Former Kolkata Knight Riders team director Joy Bhattacharjya came up to criticize Pandya’s transfer to the Mumbai Indians, since the move caused a great deal of controversy. He attempted to push a 2010 transfer from the Rajasthan Royals to the Mumbai Indians, using Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja as an example.
It is not a fantastic idea, in my opinion, for the competition, as something similar nearly occurred in 2010. Because the franchise had signed Ravindra Jadeja and he decided to move on, he did not play during that particular season. Joy Bhattacharjya stated on the Oaktree Sports YouTube Channel, “He had stated that he doesn’t want to play for Rajasthan Royals anymore, and so he was banned for a year because they said that you cannot break the system.”
It won’t be a good idea to proceed down that path if a player abruptly announces, “Take me from the auction, but I do not want to play for you,” and you start to support this trend. That’s the reason it was discontinued in 2010,” he said.
This, in my opinion, is not a wise precedent for the league: Joy Bhattacharjya
Furthermore, he believed that Hardik Pandya’s transfer to Mumbai creates a negative example for other big players by suggesting that they can force a shift if they raise enough agitation.
“You have permitted this to occur with a major participant in 2023. The fact is that players will realize that if they can cause enough of a commotion, the franchise will leave them if you start permitting it. Joy Bhattacharjya stated, “I don’t think this is a good precedent for the league.”
