Thanks to a fast start from Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan, the Gujarat Titans scored 196 for 8 on a black-soil field where 180 was predicted to be the par total.
Gill stated prior to the season that he wants GT to make the most of the powerplay because, with a run rate of 7.72 previous season, they were the slowest team in that phase. After six overs, Gill and Sudharsan both tried their hardest to raise that total and lead the team to 66 for no loss.
In the IPL, it was their third-highest powerplay score. At that point, Gill and Sudharsan were both on 32 off 18.
However, as the pitch limits were loosened, MI took everything back. In addition to losing Gill to Hardik Pandya, GT was only able to score 13 runs between overs seven and nine. In T20 cricket, Hardik has already removed Gill four times in 18 balls while conceding just 11 runs.
In the tenth over, Mitchell Santner was hit for a six and a four off consecutive balls by Jos Buttler, ending the boundary drought. In the fourteenth over, Buttler was dismissed by Mujeeb Ur Rahman, but Sudharsan kept GT running. He led the team to 170 for 3 after 17 overs, scoring his second fifty off 33 balls in as many games.
But then GT fell apart. Rahul Tewatia was run out, Sherfane Rutherford holed out to deep extra cover, and Trent Boult used a yorker to trap Sudharsan leg before wicket. Kagiso Rabada and Rashid Khan both hit sixes, but GT was only able to muster 26 in the final three.
When Boult informed the commentators after the innings that MI aimed to keep GT below 200, half the work was done. He anticipated that the dew would make the hunt easier now that it had begun to set in.
