In a recent conversation, Venkatesh Iyer clarified what would specifically cause Gautam Gambhir, the current Indian head coach and former mentor of the Kolkata Knight Riders, to smile and deviate from his customary grave manner. It’s interesting to note that whether on or off the pitch, Gambhir has virtually always been seen with a composed and serious expression.
Iyer presented Gambhir with the one situation that may make him grin. But off the pitch, he showed exhibited Gambhir’s playful nature.
It’s really difficult to get GG Sir to smile. Only when we win does he smile. However, it’s only his game face; as you are aware, he is a strong competitor and quite intense, which is why he is considered one of the most competitive sportsmen or thinkers in Indian cricket. Iyer told Revsportz, “There are moments when it’s hard to believe that he’s the same guy who sits out there (during a match) with a fierce look.”
Gambhir has previously engaged in heated arguments with players and referees while watching from the sidelines on several occasions. His tense clashes with former Royal Challengers Bengaluru captain Virat Kohli during the 2013 and 2023 Indian Premier Leagues were the most notable instances.
