The Women’s Premier League, or WPL, has quickly emerged as one of the nation’s most prestigious 20-over female franchise cricket competitions, much like the IPL . Since its start, the WPL has consisted of five teams, three of whom are IPL franchises: RCB, MI, and DC. Due to the tournament’s increasing popularity, individuals have requested that new teams be included in order to elevate it to even greater heights.
Arun Singh Dhumal, the league’s chairperson, has categorically denied any immediate intentions to bring more teams to the WPL. Before making any additional modifications to the way the WPL is now played, Dhumal, a significant figure within the Indian cricket board, believes that it would require some more time to solidify the current format.
Prior to calling for the addition of any more teams, we would like to improve this event even more for the time being.
The Indian Express cited the IPL chairman as saying, “There are no immediate plans (to add teams).”
As a result, the WPL has experienced tremendous growth in terms of stadium attendance in just three editions. The broadcast numbers are all quite positive. Additionally, it has given women’s cricket a fresh boost globally, so we hope this keeps growing. And this bodes really good for women’s cricket generally as well as for the event,” Dhumal continued.
Speaking of the WPL, the Mumbai Indians Women won the most recent 2025 tournament after defeating the Delhi Capitals by eight runs. With 523 runs from 10 games at an average of 65.37, Nat Sciver-Brunt was the 2025 leading scorer. She was the tournament’s MVP as well. Amelia Kerr, the outstanding all-rounder from New Zealand, took the most wickets with an average of 15.94 and 18 at an economy of 7.75.
