The ICC Cricket World Cup, which is set to take place from October 5 to November 19, is quickly approaching, and the cricketing community is preparing for it. Sourav Ganguly, a former BCCI president and former captain of India, provided a look into his perspective on the eagerly anticipated event in a recent interview.
When asked about India’s chances in the competition, Sourav Ganguly didn’t mince words. He voiced confidence in the Indian team, pointing to their strong recent performance and important Asia Cup triumph.
“India is a really strong team, a terrific side, and most importantly, they have a great momentum right now. Team India had a very successful past month and a half. They triumphed in the significant Asia Cup. I have a lot of hope,” Sourav Ganguly stated in an interview with India Today.
Sourav Ganguly offered his perspective on India’s recent performances in ICC competitions. Despite recent close calls, he recognized that India hasn’t won the ICC Trophy since 2013. He yet maintained his optimism, saying,
It takes place in the game. India competed in the finals in England in 2017 but fell short to Pakistan. India competed well at the 2019 World Cup but fell short in the semifinals. They have good play. India should win the crucial games in this World Cup, which is crucial in World Cup-like competitions. On November 19 in Ahmedabad, I hope India will play in the World Cup championship game,” he continued.
When asked which Indian team members should be kept an eye on, Ganguly cited the talents of Shubman Gill and Jasprit Bumrah. He also offered kind comments for the Indian team’s captain, Rohit Sharma, praising him as an exceptional leader.
The selection of Ravi Ashwin for the team has been one of the major discussion points in the run-up to the World Cup. Ganguly, who is renowned for his keen cricketing insight, applauded the choice and emphasized the significance of specialists in this game format.
He is an excellent spinner. He is arguably the world’s best off-spinner. He is also India’s top spinner. I’ve always believed that a specialist is crucial to this format. It was a wise choice. Axar Patel was sidelined due to injury, thus it might be a coincidence. But I believe it to be a wise choice,” he continued.
When evaluating the opposition, Sourav Ganguly chose England and Australia as serious adversaries, deeming them to be more potent than Pakistan. Australia, England, New Zealand, and India were his top four sides for the competition.
