After a brilliant T20I performance against Australia, teenage hitter Dewald Brevis appears primed to shine in ODIs. South Africa captain Temba Bavuma hinted at Brevis’ ODI debut ahead of the first ODI on Tuesday, August 19 at Cairns’ Cazaly’s Stadium.
He loves seeing fresh talent play internationally, according to Bavuma. He highlights Brevis’s brilliant batting performance in the T20Is of the current trip. He said that he will see Brevis for the Proteas in 50-over cricket, which is a different format and requires a different mentality.
“Seeing fresh faces is exciting. Naturally, Brevis has been the topic. His hand has been raised to demonstrate his abilities. I’m curious about his one-day skills “Bavama stated during Monday’s pre-match press conference.
Shukri Conrad: Dewald Brevis is refreshing.
Proteas head coach Shukri Conrad was particularly impressed with Brevis’s record-breaking century in the T20Is against a powerful Australian team. His individual performances weren’t enough as Australia won the series 2-1. Although they lost the series, Conrad believes they deserved Brevis, who he says brings fresh air to the team.
“We may be too humble. We don’t demonstrate our abilities enough. As Dewald Brevis does. I hope he keeps playing like a 22-year-old as he ages. Experienced players sometimes change their style. “He’s refreshing,” Conrad commented after the third T20I.
Tuesday will be Australia’s first ODI against South Africa since the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 game was abandoned. The weather forecast for Cairns calls for clear skies throughout day, allowing for a full game of cricket. As the 2027 ODI World Cup approaches, both teams will focus on the series.
