The format of the Champions Trophy, according to South African captain Temba Bavuma, makes it more difficult than the World Cup. Unlike the ODI World Cup, which has nine league games before the knockout stages, the 2025 Champions Trophy, which will be played in Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates starting on February 19, will only have three league games for each country.
“During the World Cup, you have time to regroup and take charge. However, such is not possible in the Champions Trophy, but we hope to advance in the competition. When you look at the 50-over World Cup, the format makes it more difficult for teams, but we obviously have our sights set on winning.
The Champions Trophy this time,” Temba Bavuma said.
South Africa is grouped with Afghanistan, Australia, and England in Group B. February 21 will mark the beginning of Bavuma and his men’s battle against Afghanistan. The Proteas are presently playing in a tri-series against New Zealand and Pakistan, however several of its best players are not playing because they are competing in the SA20 2025.
“It is a great chance for a couple of individuals who have been doing well in T20 competitions and domestic cricket to demonstrate their worth to the club. We will be able to get used to playing in Pakistan and gain expertise that we can impart to a larger audience. The tri-series will also provide young players with a chance to continue playing in the future.
