Temba Bavuma believes the South African spinners will do well in the two-match Test series against India, which begins at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens on Friday, November 14.
According to the South African skipper, his team’s strongest strength has been bowling, which can help them take 20 wickets in a Test match. Tristan Stubbs, who bowls off-spin part-time, was also mentioned by him as someone who can contribute in a meaningful way.
“As a team, we have always excelled at bowling. With those spin resources, we’re likely even more in control now. On the day of the second unofficial Test match between India A and South Africa A in Bengaluru, Temba Bavuma told reporters, “We have Tristan Stubbs as well. If we do need another off-spinner, he can come in with something different.”
“You do realize that the bowlers must be able to take 20 wickets? If the circumstances indicate that spin is a concern, then at least we have the resources, he continued. “I think we’re pretty confident in our ability now.”
It is anticipated that Senuran Muthusamy, Simon Harmer, and Keshav Maharaj, the spin three, will replicate their valiant performance from the Pakistan tour last month. The aforementioned spinners combined to take 33 wickets as the Proteas drew a two-match Test series 1-1 in Pakistan.
Since the 1999–2000 season, when Hansie Cronje was captain, South Africa has failed to win a Test series in India. Temba Bavuma is aware that his team will be held to high standards following their victory over Australia earlier this year to win the World Test Championship.
“I don’t believe the South African side has won a Test series in India in a very long time. As a result, I believe that there is a huge opportunity there as well as a significant target on our backs as the South African Test squad. As world champions, I believe there are expectations placed on us,” Temba Bavuma remarked.
In India, playing is always difficult: Temba Bavuma
Bavuma believes that the young and gifted group of Indian players can slot in and challenge South Africa even without Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravichandran Ashwin.
It’s never easy to play in India. You have witnessed the emergence of youthful brilliance. The men enter and begin filling the boots. It’s a huge undertaking. India has been represented on the world stage by the performers you listed, who have performed for the country for many years. However, we will plan as thoroughly as possible, be aware of the difficulties we will face, and make every effort to present ourselves in the best possible light,” Bavuma stated.
