‘Tried our best, wasn't enough time in the end’ - Temba Bavuma after a level first Test matchup with the West Indies

The first Test match of the series between South Africa and the West Indies concluded in Trinidad on equal terms. Although the rain had other ideas and let the West Indies rally, the visitors remained hopeful of winning. With Temba Bavuma leading the way, the team amassed a lead of 124 runs in the first innings and got off to a strong start at bat in the second. Interesting enough, South Africa proclaimed their innings at 173 runs, with the intention of winning the match in the final few hours, despite Tristan Stubbs leading the way with 68 runs.

The team captained by Kraigg Brathwaite, nevertheless, made the decision to try and chase 298 runs. In the process, they lost a couple of wickets early on, but Keacy Carty and Alick Athanaze were able to rally. When the latter scored 92 runs, West Indies gained much-needed momentum and looked set to win; however, the rain had caused too much damage, and a draw was agreed upon by both sides.

Temba Bavuma, the captain of South Africa, expressed some disappointment at not winning. He clarified that although the wickets didn’t fall as much as he had anticipated, he was pleased with the batting effort overall, especially with Stubbs, who contributed a significant blow during the second innings. He thinks the weather was a spoiler and the Proteas could have succeeded if they had had a little more time.

“On our end, we made every effort. simply wasn’t long enough in the end. Wicket also didn’t split up as much as we anticipated. A good, competitive game of cricket was defeated by the elements. Used an extra batter to account for our inexperience. As hitters, we’d like to be more brutal. A blow like that will sap a man’s confidence like Stubbs does. several advantages. The weather caused us to lose time, Bavuma stated during the post-match press conference.

Keshav and KG seemed to be the most likely players to take wickets on that particular wicket: Temba Bavuma

Additionally, the captain of South Africa praised Keshav Maharaj and Kagiso Rabada for their outstanding bowling performances. For the most of the day, the two had been quite hard-working for the visiting team. Notably, during the second innings of the first Test, the pair combined to bowl 38.2 overs and split five wickets.

“We had hoped for the wicket to degrade a little further, but that didn’t happen. With all we could muster, we did our best. If we had a little more time, our statement might have changed. Keshav and KG seemed to be the most equipped players to take wickets on that particular surface.
