Tauseef Ahmed

While the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup is being played in India, Tauseef Ahmed, a former cricket player, has been named by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) as the men’s national team acting chief selector.

After Inzamam ul Haq resigned last week, he was appointed. A conflict of interest arising from Inzamam’s holding of stock in a sports management company that develops a number of current national players led to his resignation.

Choosing Pakistan’s Test side for the next three-match series against hosts Australia, which starts on December 14, would be Ahmed’s first responsibility. The customary Boxing Day and New Year’s Tests will be held in Melbourne and Sydney, with Perth hosting the opening Test.

Between 1980 and 1993, the 65-year-old played 34 Test matches and 70 ODIs for Pakistan, amassing 148 wickets in all. Having played up to three Tests and thirteen ODIs in Australia, the former off-spinner will have an advantage while selecting the Pakistani lineup given the circumstances.

The head of the junior selection committee is also none other than Wajahatullah Wasti, a former cricket player. Between 1999 and 2000, Wasti scored 678 runs in fifteen ODIs and six Test matches. He also scored two centuries in red-ball cricket and one fifty in white-ball cricket.

England and Pakistan will square off in Kolkata.

On November 11, Pakistan and England, the reigning champions, will play their final group stage match of the 2017 ODI World Cup at Kolkata’s famous Eden Gardens. Pakistan’s chances of making it to the competition’s semifinals are decreasing as they win. In the meantime, a loss will remove them from contention.

The 1992 winners had a strong start to their season with two wins. Even though they had won the previous two games and staged an amazing comeback, they collapsed after that and lost four straight games. With eight points, the Men in Green are currently level with New Zealand and Afghanistan, who are ranked fourth and sixth, respectively, for fifth place in the ODI World Cup points standings.
