'All target Gautam Gambhir' – Navjot Singh Sidhu hits back at critics after Oval thriller

When India’s results don’t go their way, Gautam Gambhir gets a lot of flak, according to the former opener. Sidhu believes that following India’s impressive performance against the Three Lions, the doubters shouldn’t be afraid to praise Gautam Gambhir.

After India won the fifth and final Test match at The Oval this week to tie the high-stakes series against England, Navjot Singh Sidhu asked the cricket community to support head coach Gautam Gambhir for his choices.

We worship heroes a great deal. Every time India does poorly, everyone jumps on Gautam Gambhir and places the blame on him, I want to say. “Are you going to get up and welcome him today?” Speaking on his YouTube channel, Sidhu asked.

Sidhu commended Gautam Gambhir for providing Washington Sundar and Akash Deep with opportunities.

The former cricket player, who is now a broadcaster, acknowledged that Gambhir supported his belief that Kuldeep Yadav would have been a better choice to play in the UK.

“It was Gautam Gambhir who insisted on this transition, who given opportunities to men like Akash Deep and Washington. Indeed, Kuldeep might have been a better choice. He was convinced, though. Both today and tomorrow will present opportunities for progress. But now, give him the credit he deserves for someone who has been so heavily questioned and criticised,” he continued.

Whether in England, Brisbane, or Perth, young people have written the history: Sidhu

Both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli declared their retirements from the longest format prior to the series. According to certain claims, Gambhir was involved in their choice. Gambhir was praised by Sidhu for having faith in the team’s young players, who duly returned the favour.

“When the team went, there were a lot of unknowns who hadn’t established themselves. According to Gambhir, three or four prominent players are absent from the squad, but they should use this as a chance for others to make an impression. His statements have turned out to be accurate. Be it Brisbane, Perth, or England, history has been scripted by kids and it is a big thing,” he noted.
