Tanzim Sakib is warned by BCB for offensive Facebook posts.

On Tuesday, the Bangladesh Cricket Board announced that Tanzim Sakib had received a warning and a request not to post anything on social media that would offend the general populace.

In the recently finished Asia Cup, Tanzim Sakib made an impressive start against India. However, once his misogynistic social media posts criticizing working women surfaced, he became the center of a controversy.

After helping Bangladesh win the Under-19 World Cup in 2020, Tanzim Sakib, who only played 12 first-class matches in his brief senior career, found himself in the news for all the wrong reasons after making a post that deeply offended the people and raised questions about his religious beliefs.

“The rights of the husband are not protected if the woman works. The rights of the child are not guaranteed if the wife works. The wife’s elegance is harmed if she works, Tanzim wrote on Facebook last year.

In another post, Tanzim Sakib said that men who wed “a woman who is accustomed to free mixing with her male friends in a university” would not give their sons a “modest” mother.

Hours after he made a notable debut against India, both of these posts went viral.

According to a BCB representative, they were made aware of Tanzim’s most recent development and spoke with him about it. He also said that because the World Cup is soon, they are only issuing him a warning and that if he is found guilty again in the future, he won’t be spared.

At the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Tuesday, BCB’s cricket operation chairman Jalal Yunus said, “We had a discussion with Tanzim Sakib and wanted to know about the Facebook post. He said that he did not post it to hurt anyone, rather he posted it for his own self, and even if it hurt someone, he is sorry for that.

The general perception that he despises women, he said, is completely wrong because his mother is a woman, so how could he hate women, he asked. “There is something regarding women and he said that he is taking all the responsibility for it,” he said.

“He apologized, he said. He has acknowledged that he will refrain from posting such comments in the future after we advised him to stop.

“We will watch him closely and monitor him because this is very essential (what kind of mindset he is exhibiting). His family is really alarmed and had no idea this would happen. He’s a little boy, and the World Cup is coming up. Although we have warned him, if he continues to act in this manner, we will take legal action.

Jalal claimed to have removed all of the posts and said that BCB is prepared to assist him psychologically if needed.

“He removed his post and made all of his comments on his own (without outside influence), so we are indicating that we will watch him closely. He has expressed regret, and we will speak with him. If he encounters any difficulties, we will step up to assist him. We will also give him the support he needs for any (psychological) needs, added Jalal.

“We believe that such issues won’t arise in the future. We told him about their contract and the code of conduct required of members of the national team, and he promised to be careful going forward and expressed sorry for his actions.
