Former Bangladesh skipper Tamim Iqbal revealed he will run in the October BCB election. The left-handed opener said he would evaluate his status as a BCB director before running for president.
BCB may announce its Election Commission during the next board meeting.
The BCB constitution elects 12 directors from Category 1 Dhaka clubs by 76 councillors from different clubs. Ten councillors from eight divisions and 64 districts represent regional and district cricket associations in Category 2. The “other representatives” quota elects one Category 3 post. The National Sports Council nominates two directors to complete the 25-person board. Board of directors elects president.
We can’t predict who will become president. Personally, I see and hear much. “The main question should be whether I will run in the BCB election,” Tamim told top Bengali daily Kalerkantha on Sunday in an exclusive interview. In other forums, like the Cricketers’ Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB), the president is directly elected. Cricket boards work differently. First, you must be elected director. If two candidates run for president, the directors vote. I have a high possibility of running in the BCB election. This time, I’m running for director.”
To claim I want to be president today is stupid. If the president were a direct election, I could declare my candidacy. That will be decided after the board is elected. If I have enough support, I may run. First, I want to direct. See the rest later. You must sit in the most important chair to help Bangladesh cricket. “If I join the cricket board, I should be able to make decisions,” he said.
As an organizer, Tamim expects to become a councillor through one of his two groups. He stated that the moment has come to choose those who can advance the game.
All cricket stakeholders agree: cricket should not be political. Actually, what’s happening? People are fighting and spreading rumors. Which candidate is best for cricket isn’t being discussed. The best directors should be chosen from the many who desire the job.
There will always be other topics, but candidates’ qualifications should be the major focus. Everyone wants cricket to succeed, so that would benefit everyone.
Tamim suggested we should stop fighting and start this new trend.
“People trashing each other and spreading lies is terrible. You see all that? Some truth, some lie. We must move on and consider who will bring fresh ideas and who cricket needs now. Bangladesh needs contemporary cricket, according to the media and everyone else.
“To play such cricket, decision-makers must think modernly. You can’t just blame current cricketers. Decision-makers with a 30-year-old perspective are problematic. We need to consider who can modernize cricket “If elected, he wants to focus on infrastructure to ensure good facilities for future generations.
“If elected, you serve Bangladesh cricket for four years. If you ponder about too much in that period, nothing will get done and problems will remain pending. I regularly hear people promise to do this and that before elections, but nothing occurs. I think I should focus on two or three main topics. Overfocusing won’t help me execute anything. Otherwise, it will be like me stating something for no reason “Tamim said.
“What does Bangladesh cricket need most now? After retiring and playing cricket for 20-25 years, I think facilities should be improved first. There are players and coaches, but no talent development infrastructure. Our players have nowhere to grow. They must practice at the academy. Seven teams practice on one field during BPL/DPL. BCB is one of the world’s five richest cricket boards with an FDR of 130 Crores BDT, but it lacks amenities like an English county team “Tamim says.
I don’t hear about facility improvements. If I can, I’ll create those facilities in four years to prepare Bangladesh cricket for the following 8-10 years. Where will I make my goods if I build a shop, sell it, and have no factory? “asked.
Following the October 6, 2021 BCB election, the first board meeting was conducted. By that computation, the committee must have another election by October 7, 2025.
Sections 9.1, 9.2, and 9.3 require the BCB’s chief executive officer, under the president’s direction, to inform relevant parties to nominate councillors for the next general assembly 30 days before the election.
Section 19 and Chapter 5 require the executive committee’s Election Commission to write election regulations, set the date, finalize the voter list, and complete all formalities.
