‘The cricket board looks after me, but the players also need to be welcoming’- Tamim Iqbal on potential international return

'The cricket board looks after me, but the players also need to be welcoming'- Tamim Iqbal on potential international return

Tamim Iqbal‘s last few years haven’t been the most enjoyable after serving Bangladesh cricket for many years. Tamim quickly changed his mind after declaring his retirement in July 2023. But after his last appearance for the country in the ODI series against Bangladesh, he was cruelly left off of the 50-over World Cup roster.

The former captain discussed his potential return and the requirements for it to happen in a recent conversation. He appeared to be stuck, though, on the stakeholder he would represent, if given the chance at all.

“It’s a different situation if the BCB states that, notwithstanding previous disagreements, they hope to win the Champions Trophy or at the very least make it to the semi-final, and that they will endeavour to settle any disputes. It’s the proper course of action. The query is, however, “do I play for the team or the cricket board?” Where should I make the request? Sportstar cited Tamim as saying, “The cricket board takes care of me, but the players also need to be welcoming.”

I would need a specific goal if I were to return and play: Tamim Iqbal

Speaking about the matter further, Tamim mentioned one more prerequisite for which he would be open to discussing his return with the Bangladesh Cricket Board. It was about giving him more than a few games, but a lengthier run in the setup.

“I can take it into consideration and we can have a conversation if they have a well-thought-out plan in place for their goals. You are referring to the Champions Trophy, though, where there are now just four or five ODIs, three of which are in the West Indies. We’re really limited to six or seven games here. It would be pointless to return for a few games as I’ve stood back and someone else has taken my place. My finishing was not a nice experience. I would require a specific objective if I were to return and play. It wouldn’t be my intention to come back and play four or five games for fun.

What is the purpose? Will it truly assist Bangladesh cricket if I play five games? Everyone says, ‘Come back, we want you,'” Tamim continued. A few months before the 2025 Champions Trophy, Bangladesh will be visiting the West Indies for a three-match ODI series.
