The USA defeated Pakistan in a super over on Thursday, June 6, at Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas, causing the first upset of the 2024 T20 World Cup.
Monank Patel, captain of the USA, chose to bowl first after winning the toss. After Steven Taylor produced a one-handed stunner at first slip off Saurabh Netravalkar, Pakistan suffered a dreadful start when they lost Mohammad Rizwan in the second over. Usman Khan and Fakhar Zaman were both removed by the former champions while the USA was on the rampage during the powerplay.
In order to save the Pakistani innings, Shadab Khan, who batted at No. 5, and captain Babar Azam cobbled together a vital 72-run standoff over 48 balls. But Usman Khan fell for a golden duck as Pakistan lost half their side for 98 runs after the all-rounder left for a 25-ball 40. Before Iftikhar Ahmed and Shaheen Afridi’s cameos helped the Asian giants end on 159/7 in their 20 overs, Babar was removed for a 43-ball 44.
After a composed beginning, the USA responded by scoring 35 runs in 31 balls together before Naseem Shah removed Monank Patel. Pakistan’s body language significantly declined as Andries Gous and Patel combined to score 68 runs off of 48 balls. Still, the tourists revived the game as they removed both of them in successive overs. Despite his impressive fifty runs off of thirty-eight balls, the USA skipper would have preferred to see his team win.
Aaron Jones, the hero of the USA’s previous game, and Nitish Kumar teamed up to lead their team to 145/3, needing 15 runs to win the final over. Babar put Haris Rauf in to bowl the twentieth over. Just three runs were scored off of the first three balls. Shaheen Afridi missed a normal chance to dismiss Jones when Pakistan had the opportunity to take his wicket at mid-off.
After Jones hit one off the middle, the fourth ball was lofted for a six. Five runs were required off the final ball, and the fifth ball produced a single. After having trouble during his knock, Nitish managed to strike a crucial boundary with the final ball to bring his team’s score to par.
Super-overcome chaos results.
In the Super Over, the USA batted first, and Harmeet Singh and Jones came out to the middle. Mohammad Amir’s opening delivery went for a boundary, setting up a good opportunity for the newcomers. On the pitch, Amir’s teammates were careless and inconsistent with the ball. Of the 18 runs the USA scored in the over, just 10 were scored at bat.

The task of bowling the Super Over for the United States fell to Netravalkar. With his third ball, he managed to get rid of Iftikhar Ahmed. After Shadab took the batting, Pakistan managed to get a boundary thanks to a fortunate break. Shadab eventually managed just a single when seven runs were required off the final ball. After the outcome, the USA players were justifiably cocky, while the Pakistani side was in deep despair.
Below are some more highlights from the game:
USA have to face 4 high-quality pacers on this pitch, which has some zip, but so far with the ball and on the field, it has been super impressive. #PAKvUSA #T20WordCup

On a fairly decent batting condition as a captain if you are playing 40+ ball inning with 100 strike rate. You aren’t helping your team cause. #babarazam
