Before hitting a scorching fifty in the second ODI against the South Africa U-19 team, Vaibhav Suryavanshi was removed cheaply in the first. But on Wednesday, January 7, at Willowmoore Park in Benoni, he smashed a three-figure score in the final ODI.
India had already won the first two ODIs with ease, securing the three-match series. Muhammad Bulbulia, the captain of Proteas, won the toss and chose to field first in the third ODI. This didn’t work out well, though, as the Indian openers pounded the opposition bowling with contempt.
Suryavanshi, who reached his fifty off just 24 balls in the eighth over, was the main culprit.
With a boundary behind square on the off-side, he reached the milestone. After reaching his half-century, the southpaw slowed down a little and was dropped in the thirteenth over as well. But in the 16th over, he blasted two sixes off medium pacer Paul James, breaking the shackles.
After taking a single off Jason Rowles’ delivery in the 23rd over, the Bihar batsman reached his century. It only took him 63 balls to reach the target. On his way to his century, he had struck eight sixes and seven fours. The 14-year-old went from strength to strength, hitting two fours and two sixes before being removed in the 26th over after reaching a three-figure.

Rowles moved to his left to make a great grab, but Ntando Soni beat Suryavanshi with a short of length delivery that went deep backward square. After only 74 balls, the Indian captain went out for 127 runs. During his thrilling knock, he hit nine fours and ten sixes, finishing with a strike rate of 171.62.
Aaron George and Suryavanshi’s opening combination scored 227 runs off of 154 balls. With Vedant Trivedi by his side, the latter is poised to reach a century.
