Star cricketer Suryakumar Yadav is expected to be replaced as India’s T20I captain following the conclusion of the T20 World Cup in 2026, which is a startling event. With current vice-captain Shubman Gill leading the race for a promotion and becoming India’s captain in all international formats, a new leader is expected to replace Suryakumar Yadav as the wrecker-in-chief.
Since making his debut in 2021, Suryakumar Yadav has been in the worst form in Twenty20 Internationals. After 21 games in 2025, the Mumbai cricketer has only managed to score 218 runs at an average of 13.62. The great batter’s poor form is exacerbated by the fact that he has not scored a half-century since 2024.
Additionally, Suryakumar Yadav is 35 years old, and the BCCI wants to replace him with a younger player.
Since the international event is only a few months away, the selection committee’s initial proposal to remove Suryakumar Yadav has been shelved, according to India Today. Suryakumar Yadav tenure as captain has been extended a bit further since the team will not want to try switching captains before a significant event.
But even Deputy Shubman Gill has had trouble getting going with the bat. Gill only managed to score 32 runs in the just finished series against South Africa. He missed the fifth and final match due to a leg injury, when Sanju Samson, the backup opener and wicketkeeper, made an impressive 37 off 21 balls. Therefore, in order to gain captaincy in the shortest format of the game, Gill will also need to have some significant promise and demonstrate his abilities through performances.
The BCCI has declared that their team for the twenty-team competition will be formally unveiled from their Mumbai headquarters on Saturday, December 20. After the meeting, Ajit Agarkar, the chief selector, is anticipated to read out the official squad during a news conference. Agarkar will be seated next to Suryakumar, who will be leading India in the competition.
