India’s Twenty20 International skipper Suryakumar Yadav was reportedly not overly excited about Shubman returning to the starting lineup, according to a report from CricBlogger. The seasoned veteran believed that the aggressive style of cricket the Men in Blue had been playing since he took over wasn’t compatible with Shubman’s conventional batting style. To the selection committee chaired by Ajit Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir, Suryakumar Yadav expressed his misgivings.
In September, Shubman Gill returned to Twenty20 International cricket at the 2025 T20 Asia Cup. The national selectors have not given him a chance to play in the game’s smallest format since the July 2024 T20I series against Sri Lanka. The Punjab hitter, however, was named vice-captain and made a comeback to the starting lineup for the eight-team tournament.
Shubman only managed 127 runs from seven innings at an average of 21.17 during the campaign, making it an unmemorable time. It was not during the campaign that he reached a half-century. He did, however, create a few of explosive opening partnerships with Abhishek Sharma, who went on to win Player of the Tournament.
Gambhir and the selectors, however, emphasized the Gujarat Titans captain’s long-term worth as an all-format player as well as his recent consistency. Shubman returned ahead of the continental competition after they made the final decision.
According to reports, Suryakumar Yadav was taken by surprise when the decision was revealed to him just minutes before the final squad was revealed.
It is thought that Shubman will be the next captain of India in all formats. The Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy earlier this year marked the beginning of his time as India’s red-ball captain. For the first time, he captained the Indian squad in ODI cricket on Sunday, October 19.
But in the shortest format, Shubman could have to wait a bit longer before assuming control. Following his appointment as the T20 team’s manager last year, Suryakumar Yadav has performed admirably. Under his leadership, India has not yet suffered a series defeat. The 35-year-old’s failure to captain the Asian powerhouses in the T20 World Cup the following year would be shocking.
