In a ‘This or That’ challenge, former India fast bowler Varun Aaron selected Rashid Khan as the top T20I captain, disregarding notable names like Aiden Markram and Suryakumar Yadav—among others.
In the United Arab Emirates, Rashid recently captained Afghanistan in the 2025 Asia Cup. The Blue Tigers, however, lost to Bangladesh and Sri Lanka and were unable to go past the group stage. In spite of the disaster, Aaron favoured Rashid as his primary captain in the game’s shortest format.
According to an interview with ESPNcricinfo, Aaron selected Rashid early on and remained with him the entire game. In addition to Suryakumar Yadav and Markram, the former right-arm seamer disregarded players like Shai Hope, Mitchell Marsh, Mitchell Santner, Harry Brook, Charith Asalanka, and Salman Ali Agha. At the moment, each of these players is leading their country in Twenty20 international cricket.
In the recent Asia Cup, Suryakumar Yadav led the Men in Blue to victory.
India won seven straight games to capture the coveted title for a record-tying ninth time, keeping them undefeated throughout the eight-team competition. In his 29 T20I matches as captain, he has only lost four of them.
Last year, Markram guided South Africa to the T20 World Cup finals. In a men’s T20 World Cup competition, he became the first player to lead the Proteas to the championship game. His overall T20I captaincy record, however, is dismal; as a leader, he has only won 14 of 31 games.
But Rashid has led the Afghans in 38 Twenty20 Internationals. Afghanistan has achieved 20 victories, yielding a 52.63 win percentage. Afghanistan reached the semifinals of the 2024 T20 World Cup, but South Africa defeated them.
Afghanistan has lost to Bangladesh in Sharjah on successive occasions following their disappointing Asia Cup campaign. The insignificant third Twenty20 International between the two nations will take place on Sunday, October 5.
