Suryakumar Yadav is set to equal Virat Kohli's record as 2nd fastest to 2500 T20I runs

In the second edition of the current three-match T20I series, dominating Team India (IND) will play visiting Bangladesh (BAN) on Wednesday, October 9, in Delhi. Interestingly, the forthcoming match will take place in the well-known Arun Jaitley Stadium, which is located in the nation’s capital. It’s interesting to note that T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav will have extra meaning for the second T20I match.

Yadav has made 73 appearances in T20I cricket and has amassed 2,461 runs thus far. Thus, Mr. 360, also known as Sky, will have a fantastic opportunity to leave his mark on Indian cricket’s T20I history in the Delhi match. Prominent batsman Virat Kohli amassed 4,188 runs for India before quitting the format and winning the world championship. Even though Suryakumar is still far from reaching the total, there is currently another record that is knocking on his door.

Notably, in his 72nd game, Sky is only 39 runs away from matching Kohli’s record to become the second fastest batter in the history of the format, behind the great batsman. Kohli, who announced his retirement on June 29 of this year, reached the 2,500-run milestone in his 73rd outing for the Men in Blue. In Twenty20 Internationals, Pakistani batsman Babar Azam became the fastest player to reach 2,500 runs. Notably, Babar needed 67 matches to accomplish this record.

Fastest batters to score 2,500 runs in T20Is

Player Name Country Total Matches Taken
Babar Azam Pakistan 67
Virat Kohli India 73
Mohammad Rizwan Pakistan 76
Aaron Finch Australia 78
Martin Guptill New Zealand 86
Suryakumar Yadav chasing sixes record, captaincy win record

Regarding Suryakumar Yadav’s career in international cricket, the Mumbai-born batsman made his Team India T20I debut in 2021. He made a brief appearance (29 off 14 balls) in the first T20I match of the series against Bangladesh in Gwalior in his most recent outing. There were three sixes and two boundaries throughout his knock, respectively.

Furthermore, Suryakumar will surpass Nicholas Pooran, the powerful batter from the West Indies, if he can knock at least six maximums in his next game. He will go down as the third hitter in the T20I format with the most sixes thanks to this event. Sky has hit 139 sixes so far, whereas Pooran has played in 98 Twenty20 Internationals and has 144 sixes under his belt.

Rohit Sharma, the captain of Team India for both the ODI and Test formats, leads the six-hitting contest overall. The captain of the World Cup winning team has hammered 205 sixes in his 159 Men in Blue appearances. With 173 sixes from 122 T20I games, Martin Guptill of New Zealand is in second place behind him.

After winning the T20 World Cup in the West Indies earlier this year, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli made the decision to retire from the shortest format, and Team India is currently going through a transitional period. After that, Suryakumar Yadav was given the go-ahead to advance the caravan and create new stars for the team. In his 11 T20I matches as a captain, Sky has guided the Blue Brigade to victory nine times and only two defeats.

Yadav will therefore tie superstar all-around player Hardik Pandya, who has 10 victories to his credit as a skipper, if the hosts win the Delhi match. As a result, Suryakumar will rank fourth among Team India’s captains in terms of winning percentage, behind Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, MS Dhoni, and Pandya.

Most successful Captains for India in T20Is

Player Total wins
Rohit Sharma 50
MS Dhoni 42
Virat Kohli 32
Hardik Pandya 10
Suryakumar Yadav 09*
