Suryakumar Yadav Has Shown Glimpses, but Big Runs Haven’t Come for Long: Parthiv Patel

Suryakumar Under Scrutiny for Poor Batting Returns

The former cricket player feels that Suryakumar’s performances fell short of expectations for a batter of his level, even though he worked hard with Mumbai on the local circuit for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025. In his five appearances in the domestic championship, the star batsman failed to hit a single half-century.

The five Twenty20 Internationals between India and South Africa will start on Tuesday at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack. Cricketer-turned-commentator Parthiv Patel has discussed the hosts’ captain Suryakumar Yadav’s urgent need to score significant runs as the players lock in their preparations.

When you look at the batter, Suryakumar Yadav, you can see that he needs to score runs.

We caught a glimpse of him when he got a start in Australia. In a Star Sports conversation, Parthiv stated, “We have seen some innings in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025–26 as well, but those big runs haven’t come.”

The former wicketkeeper-batter emphasised how high-risk shots accounted for the majority of Suryakumar’s runs. He said that rather than being aggressive from the start, it would be better for the 35-year-old to spend more time at the crease before moving on with his innings.

“The flick is his favourite shot when it comes to the leg-side. He has really rapid feet and picks the length quickly. 50% of his points come from the fine leg in the leg-side area. In those sections, the majority of your shots are off balls that are bowled into the stumps. This implies that you are assuming a great deal of danger. He should take some time, in my opinion, and if he does, we’ll see him score those runs on the leg side once more,” he continued.

Only 84 runs were scored in Suryakumar’s four innings during India’s most recent five-match series in Australia. The powerful batter was unable to bat long enough in the middle despite batting at a strike rate of 171.42.

The Indian squad will be hoping for their captain to get back to his batting form as the T20 World Cup 2026 draws near.
