There has been a lot of interest in the future of Suryakumar Yadav’s captaincy in T20Is after Shubman Gill assumed both Test and ODI captaincy. There is more conjecture that Gill will take over the shortest format now that he is the team’s vice-captain and leads in both formats. Suryakumar has acknowledged that he is afraid about losing the role, nevertheless.
India has been changing its leadership system ever since Ajit Agarkar suggested that the team might have a single captain for all three formats. Rohit Sharma has previously been replaced by the 26-year-old in both Test and ODI matches. His achievements in red-ball cricket, including a 2-0 sweep of the West Indies and a series draw in England, have elevated him to the position of face of India’s future leadership.
It is now evident that the selectors saw Gill as India’s all-format captain as the ODI captaincy was formally transferred and he is now the vice-captain of the T20I team. After India’s T20 World Cup 2024, Suryakumar, who assumed the T20I captaincy, spoke up on the subject.
Everyone experiences the terror, I won’t lie. However, it’s the kind of terror that keeps you going. Had I been impacted by such things and given them a lot of thought, I wouldn’t have played my first ball in international cricket in the manner that I did. Therefore, I have long since moved past that fear. “I think that if I work hard on myself, follow the rules, work really hard, and be honest with myself, the rest will be taken care of,” Suryakumar stated at Express Adda.

I’m really glad for him: Suryakumar
Even though his time as captain has been brief, he has already guided India to victory in the Asia Cup 2025. But, as Gill is the captain of the Gujarat Titans in the IPL and is regarded as a long-term player, his position has unavoidably been under strain. Notably, he also gave Gill high marks for his leadership and maturity.
“He became captain in two forms, which makes me extremely delighted for him. Off the pitch as much as on it, Gill and I have an incredible bond. I am aware of the type of player and person he is. Therefore, it simply inspires me to perform well, but I’m glad for him,” Suryakumar continued.
