Suryakumar Yadav addresses India’s fielding woes

India’s 82.7% catching efficiency since the beginning of 2025 only places them seventh among Full Member countries; skipper Suryakumar Yadav is keen to raise this figure as his team is ready to defend its T20 World Cup title the following year.

It is evident that the top-ranked T20I squad is concerned about the Indian team’s fielding performance, especially in catching. Despite winning the Asia Cup without losing a single match, their fielding looked subpar even during that recent event.

“I believe that the catches will be dropped. If you’re a fielder, you’ll drop and try to make the catch. Similarly, if you are a batter, you will be removed. If you are a bowler, you may attempt to hit the ball correctly but fail to get a wicket.

“All of these are a part of the game,” Suryakumar Yadav stated during the press conference held prior to the game.

However, I think that what you do after that matters more. Today’s session was optional. Everyone, however, showed up at the field today. That implies that the group is aiming for something truly exceptional. And if we want to be the world’s top fielding unit, I have stated that we will need to put in a lot of effort in this domain. You can watch how many teams make good receptions, field well, and win games on the field. Therefore, if you do one thing well in fielding, you can win a match even if the batting is weak or the bowling is inconsistent. Thus, we’re working hard,” he wrote.

Building a contagious enthusiasm that can motivate the team throughout even the most boring play is the goal. Fielding, in Suryakumar Yadav opinion, is as much about attitude as technique. Creating happiness and fostering connections in a game that frequently divides participants based on their responsibilities is the goal.

“We are making great efforts on it. However, there is no assurance that you won’t miss it again tomorrow, even if you catch 25 catches today [during training]. One may overlook it. The game includes it. For me, what matters is how much you want the ball to come to you and how you work to generate that opportunity and intent. It doesn’t matter whether the catch is missed. There is disappointment, of course. Nevertheless, if you are making the effort, there is no issue,” Suryakumar Yadav stated.

Fielding is the only department, in my opinion, where everyone congregates. Otherwise, each person has a unique batting skill. The ability to bowl is personal. Eleven people live together on the ground in the fields, though. No matter what happens throughout the game, it is crucial to create a certain atmosphere. If you field properly, you can win the game even if the opposing team is at the top. In my opinion, you should build a sense of community when you are living on the ground,” Suryakumar Yadav continued.

Suryakumar Yadav emphasized the value of having fun on the field, particularly when pressure builds, and of fostering an environment where players can enjoy themselves while playing. In 2025, he scored 100 runs at a strike rate of 105.26 in 11 innings, reflecting on his own performance. However, he exudes serenity rather than worry in both his speech and body language.

“We had a team meeting with the T20 team for just two days. Some guys were playing one day before that. Having pleasure on the ground is therefore crucial. Since all of these things show on the ground when you’re under pressure. Alternatively, when you are aware that the game is getting a little tight. and how to embrace the environment that was created at that moment. Thus, all of these minor details come to mind,” Suryakumar Yadav remarked.

“I think my work has been pretty intense. I had been doing it previously. It’s not that I didn’t work hard before; in fact, I continue to work hard. Back home, I had a good several sessions, and here, I’ve had two or three. I’m in a good place, then. That is crucial, in my opinion. Runs will eventually come, but I believe that putting in a lot of effort to achieve the team goal is more essential than what the team needs from you in various circumstances. I take each game as it comes, and if it starts, I think it will be beneficial,” Suryakumar Yadav continued.
