Given the playing style and team composition of the Indian T20I side, former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa believes that Suryakumar Yadav‘s position at number three is the best one. Uthappa believed that Yadav shouldn’t sacrifice his batting position because of the additional responsibility of captaincy.
It’s a decision where you have to manage your captaincy and evaluate your performances, so it’s like you’re caught between two rocks. Making this choice is really tough. But in my opinion, he ought to take one position. “I think Suryakumar’s number three spot in T20 cricket is the best,” Uthappa said in a video posted to his YouTube page.
At the moment, Suryakumar is in charge of Australia’s T20I team.
Depending on whatever top-order batsman has been dismissed, Yadav might alternate between No. 3 and No. 4, according to the former wicketkeeper-batter. Yadav shouldn’t bat at any position lower than two down, he acknowledged.
“After the top three are decided, you can add flexibility. You can bring combos from left to right. They most likely decided that Surya would come at No. 3 in the Asia Cup if a right-hander got out, and Tilak Varma would come at No. 3 if a left-hander got out. Suryakumar Yadav shouldn’t drop below No. 4, but that’s still fine. If a top-order hitter must bat below No. 4, he must make many modifications,” he continued.
Speaking of Yadav T20I record, the 35-year-old batsman has amassed 820 runs in 29 games when playing at No. 3 and 1614 runs in 47 games, with respective strike rates of 159.22 and 167.25.
Speaking of Suryakumar’s most recent encounter, he defeated Australia in the opening Twenty20 International of the five-match series in Canberra, scoring 39 off 24 to remain undefeated. After 9.4 overs of India’s innings, rain stopped play, resulting in a “no-result” for the match.
