Suryakumar and the Middle-Order Challenge

“Not out of form but out of runs,” the India captain declared after another poor performance.

Suryakumar and the Middle-Order Challenge

A pick-up shot to a ball attacking his legs has allowed Suryakumar Yadav to deposit numerous sixes. He nicked another ball off his legs on Sunday, but Ottniel Baartman made a fantastic, tumbling catch at fine leg after his bat went a little more vertically than he would have preferred.

That’s how he’s been fired a couple of times already.

Perhaps he didn’t need to confront the fielder at the boundary given the circumstances of the match, as India needed nine runs in 33 balls. However, he was only trying to find his rhythm. In the following over, Suryakumar cut loose off Lungi Ngidi after being taken off guard by a delivery from Anrich Nortje that flew up from the deck and forced him into a late cut that caught the edge and almost went to the fielder at third.

Before pulling his next ball, a short-pitched gift, for another boundary, he went airborne over mid-off to a length delivery. His cautious and dubious start—he was occasionally outpaced—made way for the kind of form his T20 batting has long yearned for after the IPL. It wouldn’t have benefited him much to end the game early, but he had discovered the groove. He would have benefited more by playing in the middle, as would the team as a whole.

It’s not that his batting hasn’t been fluid during this time, in contrast to the start he had at Dharamsala. However, his incapacity to play meaningful innings for extended periods of time has become a crucial issue for the squad as they prepare for the World Cup. Prior to the match, his strike rate in T20Is this year was 126.41, with an average of less than 15.

Even though it was just for 28 runs, the platform seemed poised to dispel that worry once more, if not with a significant score but at least some middle-field time, the kind that Shubman Gill, the other out-of-form batsman, used with a 28-ball stay in the middle. However, Tilak Varma, who was playing well, was promoted to No. 3 after Suryakumar took his time getting to the crease. Only 26 runs were needed by India by the time the captain reached the middle.

Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana exploited the swinging conditions to run through the top order during the first innings’ powerplay, thus ending the match. As the visitors were dismissed for 117, Varun Chakaravarthy, with strong help from the rest of the bowling group, also prevented any attempt by the South African middle order to recover from that dismal start. They even went as far as they did because of a single battle with a fighting 61 from Suryakumar’s opponent, Aiden Markram.

Once again, Abhishek Sharma’s early attack made sure that the South African captain’s battle ultimately had little to offer. India easily overtook the goal after closing down for four overs en way. However, it was a missed chance to use the extra time in the game with low-pressure batting as the perfect testing ground for form recovery.

Suryakumar is not pretending to be upset. He reaffirmed that he is “out of runs, not out of form” after Sunday’s victory for India.

The issue is that I’ve been hitting the nets with exquisite form. Everything that I can control, I’m attempting. You can be sure that the runs will arrive when they must. At the award ceremony, he stated, “But yes, I’m looking for runs, not out of form, but definitely out of runs.”

In a way, having most bases covered, a 2-1 series lead, a second decisive win in three games, and backup resources that hold up well when thrown into the deep end should all be encouraging for India. Even after three games, the most pressing issues still haven’t been resolved. The much-anticipated, powerful knocks from Gill and Suryakumar are still pending. Although the former had a small lead in Sunday’s low-total run-chase, it was far from the “high expectations” Ryan ten Doeschate, the assistant coach, has mentioned.

Suryakumar had mentioned that he and his deputy needed to step up and relieve the pressure on the highly effective Abhishek Sharma, but the time for making a difference is rapidly closing as the series moves into its final leg and the World Cup draws near.
