'Hats off to the selectors and Rohit Sharma'- Suresh Raina on Yashasvi Jaiswal's inclusion in India's Champions Trophy team

Since the retirement of the renowned Virender Sehwag, India has not had an aggressive top-order strategy until Yashasvi Jaiswal. The 2024 calendar year saw the southpaw finish as the second-highest run scorer. It is noteworthy that the young hitter has not yet made his ODI debut and has only played for India in Test matches and T20Is.

That being said, Jaiswal was selected based on his current performance in the confirmed squad for the Champions Trophy 2025 and the England ODI series at home. But since he hasn’t played an ODI, some have voiced doubts over his inclusion. Former Indian cricket player Suresh Raina has explained the reasoning behind the selection, emphasizing that Jaiswal has the necessary mindset and can represent India with the captain’s support.

“I believe that boy has a huge appetite for runs.” I believe that he has gladly reached that level whenever we see his story. Bravo to Rohit Sharma and the selectors. You’re taking that youngster to the Champions Trophy without him playing ODI.

He works really hard, and his dedication is excellent,” Suresh Raina told Star Sports.

However, his patience and attitude are different. This boy appears to be ready. The charm of Indian cricket lies in this. There will be people in positions of authority who will urge you to go and represent the nation if you put in the necessary effort and are passionate about it. “This is what Rohit did with Yashasvi,” he continued.

Speaking of recent performances, Jaiswal led India in scoring in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024–25, amassing 391 runs at an average of 43.44, including one hundred and two half-centuries in ten innings. Although he was selected for the 2024 T20 World Cup squad, he did not participate in any matches because Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma opened the competition.
