After election victory, Surendra Harmalkar is elected as a new MCA councillor

With the backing of President Ajinkya Naik’s ruling party, Surendra Harmalkar defeated Deepan Mistry to take over as the new Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) councillor.

However, Mistry only received 95 votes total since the poll officer rejected one of them. Moreover, only 286 of the 375 eligible voters cast ballots, making this one of the lowest turnouts of the three elections held in July and August.

Three elections have taken place in the MCA since the death of President Amol Kale in June 2024. After Kale’s death in July, Ajinkya Naik emerged victorious over vice president Sanjay Naik to assume the presidency.

“The secretaries of the college, office, school, and maidan clubs have once again shown their beneficial effect in ensuring this election victory. Our team has now triumphed three times in a row, and we are still totally dedicated to seeing Mumbai cricket grow and flourish. Ajinkya Naik was cited as saying, “The support of men’s and women’s cricket players was evident in this election.”

Surendra Harmalkar received 185 votes in the elections, which were held on Wednesday, September 18

It’s also interesting to note that Abhay Hadap’s appointment as secretary led to the elections being forced. In addition, Harmalkar spoke up over his election and expressed gratitude for the MCA’s support.

“I’ve worked with the MCA for a number of years, contributing in a variety of ways. This triumph was made possible by the excellent assistance I received from MCA president Ajinkya Naik, secretary Abhay Hadap, and other officials, Harmalkar told Mid-Day.

Harmalkar has represented Maharashtra in the All India Civil Services cricket tournament and has played office cricket for Sales Tax. He replaced Hadap, who was supported by former Indian batter Sachin Tendulkar and went on to become secretary after defeating Suraj Samat.
