In a touching pledge, former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar said that if India wins the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup, he and Jemimah Rodrigues would sing a duet. The explosive batter, who produced a knock for the ages with an undefeated 127 that helped India chase a record of 339 in the semi-final match against Australia, was also praised by Sunil Gavaskar.
The duo concept is not new. The two had previously performed together at the 2024 BCCI Awards, where they sang the well-known song “Kya Hua Tera Wada” by Hum Kisise Kum Naheen.
While Rodrigues played the guitar, Sunil Gavaskar provided the voice.
If India wins the World Cup, I’ll perform a song with her if she’s comfortable doing so. That’s all I have to say. I’m going to sing a song with her on the guitar. Sunil Gavaskar said to India Today, “We did that in the BCCI awards some time back,” according to Hindustan Times.
A band was performing there, so we made the decision to break loose and do something. A song was sung. She was playing her guitar, a skillful instrument. If she is content to do it with an elderly man after India wins, I’m game.
Rodrigues gave a temperamental and timing masterclass in the semi-final. The right-hander from Mumbai blended style and maturity as he entered the game as early as the second over following Shafali Verma’s explosive ten. After adding 46 runs with Smriti Mandhana (24 off 24), she and captain Harmanpreet Kaur (89) formed a match-winning 167-run partnership.
In a crucial match against New Zealand, Rodrigues, who had been dismissed against England earlier in the competition, had already shown that she was back to her best with an incredible 76 off 55 balls*. She maintained her unbeaten record to the very end, with nine balls remaining, by spearheading India’s historic chase.
In addition to praising Rodrigues’ hitting prowess, Sunil Gavaskar also emphasized her outstanding fielding. She is a little experienced. She has also participated in leagues abroad. Both the Hundred and the Big Bash have included her. She’s skilled at building innings. Sunil Gavaskar stated, “She has the experience, and we all know, she has had the ability.”
“Please remember what she accomplished in the field. She had two excellent run-outs. While everyone is giddy over her batting exploits, we should also acknowledge her contributions on the field. Who knows, maybe 350 was being pursued by India.
India’s triumph has propelled them to the final, where they will play South Africa in Navi Mumbai on Sunday, November 2, in a match that could produce a first-time world champion.
