Sunil Gavaskar, a former Indian opener, did not mince words when discussing India’s batting performance after the disappointing defeat to Australia in the World Test Championship Final. Several prominent cricketers may not be a part of the red-ball setup in the next two years, according to the former player.
After India’s batting collapse on the fifth day of the WTC Final at the Oval, former Indian captain and batting legend Sunil Gavaskar harshly criticized the Indian batsmen, particularly the senior players. Sunil Gavaskar opined that the team should be prepared for a transition across all disciplines, as he does not anticipate a large number of senior players in the side over the next two years.
“I am fairly certain that two years from now there will not be too many senior athletes. I’d be quite astonished. If they are present, it is wonderful because they would have sacrificed everything to get there. However, I believe that at some point you must be prepared for transition, whether it’s a 20-over game, a 50-over game, or Test cricket. However, it must occur,” Gavaskar told Star Sports.
With the Asia Cup and ODI World Cup later this year, India will be seeking a fast turnaround.
With the exception of Ajinkya Rahane, none of India’s senior batsmen surpassed 50 runs in either of their two innings, prompting Gavaskar’s comments. He was also critical of the shot selection of the Indian batsmen, particularly Virat Kohli, who lost his wicket on the fifth day’s morning after attempting an expansive drive against a wide delivery.
It is important to note that India also lost the inaugural WTC Final against New Zealand a few years ago. An ageing Indian squad will compete in the 50-over World Cup later this year and the Twenty20 World Cup the following year.
