After a difficult start in 2024, Sunil Gavaskar believes Shubman Gill has improved as an Indian Premier League (IPL) captain. The Punjab hitter was named captain of the Gujarat Titans (GT) prior to the previous season. Shubman was a good batter, but he was unable to guide his team to the postseason. With five victories and seven losses, GT actually ended eighth in the standings.
Shubman has, however, been able to turn things around in the IPL 2025, leading GT to third place with nine victories and five defeats at the completion of the league phase. The previous champions will play the five-time winners Mumbai Indians in the Eliminator on Friday, May 30 under his direction.
When Sai Sudharsan has been pursuing the bowlers in the IPL 2025, Shubman has deftly played second fiddle, as Gavaskar noted.
“What he discovered the previous year. Recall that they didn’t perform well when he was captain the previous year. Given the way he has been leading the squad with Sai Sudarshan, I am confident that we can see what he has learnt over the past year. “He’s happy to knock the singles and give him more of the strike when Sai Sudarshan is doing well,” Gavaskar told the broadcasters.
He has emotional self-control, which is crucial: Sunil Gavaskar
Shubman maintains his composure on the pitch and doesn’t lose his cool when his fielders miss catches, as Gavaskar noted. The 25-year-old motivates them to do better the next time, according to the former captain of India.
Additionally, he doesn’t become irritated when you witness a catch being dropped or a misfield in the field. He has emotional self-control, which is crucial in a game like this one when you don’t want to exacerbate the fielder’s anxiety. He is aware that he has made mistakes, but the way he continues to support and give his team kudos is a sign of a leader who has been there for them through thick and thin,” Gavaskar added.
Recently, Shubman was named India’s Test squad captain. Shortly after the IPL final, he will take over when India travels to England to play Ben Stokes and company in a five-match series.
