Sunil Gavaskar emphasizes the value of playing first class cricket to get ready for Test matches, saying, “It would have been perfect timing.”

"The Ranji Trophy had started and it would have been perfect timing for the batters to get into the groove for the Test series by playing a couple of games," said Gavaskar.

Sunil Gavaskar emphasizes the value of playing first class cricket to get ready for Test matches, saying, "It would have been perfect timing."

Against England in the second Test of the current series, Team India performed well. The hosts leveled the series with a masterful comeback in the second Test after losing the opener. Former Indian batter Sunil Gavaskar, though, claimed that certain issues were still present.

The Indian team appeared to be on course to surpass England’s target of 450 runs at one time during the second innings of the second Test. But the hosts could only muster 399 runs, a victim of a batting meltdown. In a similar spirit, former Indian great Sunil Gavaskar suggested that, as many players have limited experience in domestic cricket, young people should try to spend more time playing first-class cricket.

It is imperative that both bowlers and hitters play some first-class cricket to prepare themselves mentally and physically for the longer format of the game before a Test match series, as seen by the batters’ inability to score large runs. As the Ranji Trophy had begun, Gavaskar wrote in his column for The Mid-Day, “It would have been ideal for the batters to play a couple of games and get into the groove for the Test series.”

The Lodha tribunal mandated that states excluded from the Ranji Trophy be granted first-class status: Sunil Gavaskar

Additionally, Sunil Gavaskar discussed how the Indian Premier League has replaced the Ranji Trophy as the benchmark for player performance and eligibility for the Indian team. The former batter expressed the opinion that, in order to provide children with equal opportunity, state associations ought to adapt.

Some of the performances in the Ranji Trophy have been astounding, particularly after the Lodha panel reforms mandated that several states that were not on the Ranji Trophy circuit receive first-class status. “Although the intention was to introduce the game to every state in the nation, it failed to recognize that some states were not prepared to compete at that level,” concluded Sunil Gavaskar .
