'Keep all those shots in your back pocket'- Sunil Gavaskar criticises Gill's shot choice on Day 3 of 3rd Test

On the fourth day of the third test at The Gabba, KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja put up a little of a fight, but the Indian batting problems are far from over. Down to the final batting duo in the Indian lineup, Australia is still in command.

The batting performance of the Indian squad in the current Border-Gavaskar trophy is receiving harsh criticism. None of the top order players have scored well, with the exception of KL Rahul. Shubman Gill, one of the game’s up-and-coming new talents, was also expected to play well in addition to Indian greats Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.

His play in the series has been quite unimpressive thus far, though. This was plenty to attract the notice of Sunil Gavaskar, a former Indian legend and broadcaster who has struggled greatly with his shot selection in the five-match series thus far.

Leave your appearance in the changing room. “At the beginning of your innings, before you are set, some shots are dangerous because you don’t know what the wicket is doing,”

Sunil Gavaskar stated in an exclusive interview with Star Sports.

Gill’s dismissal in the third Test off Mitchell Starc’s delivery, when he was caught chasing a wide one and edging it to Mitchell Marsh, who made an outstanding catch in the gully area, was cited by Gavaskar to bolster his claim.

Don’t take any more shots than you need. Can you receive the shots again after you have had them when you are 30-40-50? You may say it was a poor shot choice. There was some bad luck over there, too, because it was a very good catch. However, Gavaskar went on, “He could have just left that ball alone.”

Shubman Gill is averaging just 20 runs per innings and has only scored 60 runs in his three appearances. This is a significant down from his 2021 Border Gavaskar Trophy performance, in which he amassed 259 runs at an average of 51.80.
