After his action sparked questions about its legality, Prenelan Subrayen will have his bowling action evaluated independently at a facility authorised by the ICC.
Following Tuesday’s opening ODI of the three-match series between Australia and South Africa at Cazaly’s Stadium in Cairns, match officials voiced their disapproval of his action.
On his ODI debut, the 31-year-old spin-bowling all-rounder finished his 10-over limit. He took the crucial wicket of Travis Head (27 off 24) and concluded his spell with stats of 1/46. The first wicket taken by the home team was the left-handed top-order batsman.
The most likely contenders to replace the right-arm spinner should he miss the rest of the series are Corbin Bosch and Senuran Muthuswamy, both of whom participated in the previous 20-over series.
His debut on the international cricket scene was very recent. Wiaan Mulder had scored a massive triple-century in Bulawayo during the same Test match in which Subrayen took four wickets (4/42 in 10 overs) against Zimbabwe. The right-arm spinner made his debut on Tuesday after earning a spot in the ODI squad due to his outstanding ball-handling performance.
In the opening ODI of the three-match series in Cairns, South Africa defeated Australia by 98 runs. Keshav Maharaj helped his team take the lead by contributing with the bat (13 off 12) and then putting on a career-best showing (5/33 in 10 overs). In ODIs played in Australia, this was also South Africa’s largest victory by runs.
After being put in to bat first, the Proteas amassed 296/8 in 50 overs. The three half-centurions were Matthew Breetzke (57 off 56), Temba Bavuma (65 off 74), and Aiden Markram (82 off 81). Surprisingly, Travis Head (4/57 in nine overs) was the team’s most notable bowler under Mitchell Marsh.
During the run-chase, Marsh was the only member of the home team to make a significant contribution (88 off 96). The only other hitter with a 30-plus score in the Australians’ dismal performance was Ben Dwarshuis (33 off 52). On Friday, August 22, the second game will take place at Mackay’s Great Barrier Reef Arena, where the hosts will try to win to salvage the series.
