According to former England cricketer Michael Vaughan, winning the fifth Test of the current Ashes will be crucial to securing the future of Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes, the team’s coach and captain. England is behind 3-1 going into the fifth and final Test of the current Ashes series.
Vaughan made remarks about the clumsy way England crossed the finish line during the Boxing Day Test. He believed that in order for the management to be fully certain of their decision to support McCullum and Stokes, a more convincing performance would be required.
“I believe that England will have a huge game in Sydney.” Winning a cricket match is pleasant, but let’s face it—in Melbourne, it was like winning the jackpot. The cricket match was not a true Test match. Vaughan was reported by the Sydney Morning Herald as saying, “They need to win a strong game of cricket here, one that’s not a two-dayer, for the future, and for this management in particular.”
The well-known analyst underlined that the management had stated that they would be eager to work with McCullum specifically going forward. Vaughan reaffirmed, though, that England’s performance in Sydney might have an impact on his future.
“I think they need a good week for things to be really rock solid, but I’m pretty sure that this management and people like Stokes and Baz will continue.
The group has a strong desire to retain [McCullum]. Essentially, though, there must be some open discussions if they are humiliated in Sydney, he continued.
In each of the three World Test Championship cycles to far, England has not advanced to the final, which is held in England. In the WTC points standings, they are presently ranked seventh. Even if McCullum and Stokes have a 57% victory rate, the Three Lions haven’t played well lately in the red-ball arena.
