Steyn Urges India Opener to Take Cues from Sachin

Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal was instructed by former South Africa pacer Dale Steyn to take a cue from India’s greatest player, Sachin Tendulkar, on how to avoid hitting his go-to stroke and save his wicket.

Regarding Jaiswal’s tendency to play the cut shot on balls wide outside off, Steyn was described by Indian Express as telling JioHotstar, “It’s his go-to shot, and breaking that instinct is tough.”

You take action as soon as you see the ball in your zone. But perhaps he should deliberately reduce it,” he continued.

Taking a look back to provide an example, Steyn recalled the legendary Sachin Tendulkar’s decision to refrain from playing his favourite shot, the cover drive, in Sydney twelve years ago since, before that knock, he was being out caught behind in that series. It turned out that Sachin scored 241* in the same innings.

In Australia, I recall that Sachin once took the drive out of his game. “I won’t play it unless it’s in a specific area,” Jaiswal could also need to say.

“I’ll trust my defence in this area,” Steyn remarked of the great man’s determination.

Jaiswal was eliminated using the same stroke not only in the final innings of the Guwahati Test but also in the fourth innings of the Kolkata Test.
