Following Matthew Short’s quad injury sustained during the team’s final league game against Afghanistan on Friday, Australia is probably going to rearrange its top order for the forthcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025 semi-final. The Australians will have a selection dilemma before the semi-final since Short’s injury is predicted to keep him out of the knockout match.
Late in Afghanistan’s innings, Matthew Short sustained an injury that limited his range of motion.
Despite opening with Travis Head, he was forced to rely on huge smashes because of his extremely limited ability to run between the wickets. In an opening partnership of 44 runs in 4.3 overs, the right-hander scored 20 off 15 balls before being caught at mid-on. Australian captain Steven Smith discussed Short’s prospects of making it to the semi-final after the game.
“I believe he will have difficulties. I believe we noticed that he wasn’t moving very well tonight. Smith stated, “I believe it will likely be too short between games for him to recuperate.”
Australia is unsure about the location of their semi-final.
Australia has a few options to think over now that Short is probably gone. At the top of the order, Jake Fraser-McGurk is a logical replacement for Mitchell Marsh, who was injured and brought into the team. If the squad chooses to rearrange its batting lineup, Aaron Hardie, an all-rounder, might be another choice.
“We’ve got a few guys there to come in, and we’ll be able to fill a job,” Smith stated.
Cooper Connolly, the team’s travelling reserve, may also be called upon if Short is declared officially out of the competition. In addition to affecting the batting lineup, short’s absence would deprive the assault of a useful spin-bowling option. With just 21 runs given up in his seven overs against Afghanistan, the all-rounder had been instrumental. Head and Marnus Labuschagne, who took two wickets against England earlier in the competition, are still the former champs’ part-time spin alternatives.
The team is also worried about the location of their semi-final match. The team won’t know if they will play in Dubai or Lahore until after the India vs. New Zealand match is over. Australia will play the winner of the India vs. New Zealand match if South Africa defeats England and wins Group B. Australia will face the loser of that match, though, if England prevails.
Australia will have just over twenty-four hours to be ready if they play in Dubai, where the weather is predicted to be favourable for spinners. They have already played two group-stage games in Lahore, including their triumph over England despite chasing 352, so it could be better for them to play there.
