"Pat, Andrew and Steven Smith had been having ongoing conversations separate to the untimely injury to Cameron anyway," added Bailey.

Steve Smith to not open in BGT 2024-25, set to move to middle order

Australia is working very hard to get ready for the 2024–25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The team will play the first Test of the series against India in Perth starting on November 22 to begin the main event. There may be some adjustments made to the lineup and makeup of the team before the series.

Steve Smith’s decision to bat lower in the order rather than at the top of the inning is one of the most obvious examples. George Bailey, the chair of selectors for Cricket Australia, said before of the series that Smith would be returning to the middle order.

George Bailey also disclosed that Steve Smith spoke with captain Pat Cummins and head coach.

Andrew McDonald to secure his return to the middle order, and that the development was essentially confirmed even prior to Cameron Green’s summer-ending back injury.

“In any case, Pat, Andrew, and Steven Smith had been having continuous discussions apart from Cameron’s tragic injury, and I believe Steve had indicated that he wanted to return to that open post.

He will be moving back down the list for the summer, according to confirmation from Pat and Andrew. “So, yeah, obviously we have an opening spot to fill and a No. 4 spot to fill,” cited Bailey as saying.

Some of those conversations have been place, and here’s what they could look like: George Bailey

It is important to note that George Bailey stated that captain Pat Cummins and Andrew McDonald will choose the batting order in the Perth Test, but he did not confirm that Smith would bat at number four against India. Additionally, he said that the batting order is flexible and might alter at any time.

A portion of those conversations have been held, along with what it could include. But I suppose a lot of those discussions are pointless until you actually have moving parts,” Bailey remarked.
