Former captain Michael Clarke is supporting the idea of Steve Smith opening the innings, which is a daring decision that may potentially change the dynamics of Australia’s Test cricket team. Following David Warner’s retirement, Smith has indicated interest in taking on this role; former Australia all-rounder Shane Watson first suggested this idea.
Marcus Harris, Cameron Bancroft, Matt Renshaw, and Will Pucovski are among the domestic circuit players that Cricket Australia has available. There hasn’t been overwhelming backing, though, for Smith to open with Usman Khawaja. Though the great batter has been struggling with form, Clarke agrees with Watson that Smith may find that the challenge of opening could be the catalyst he needs to revitalize his career.
“I believe they will permit him to do it if he so chooses. I believe it’s a straightforward swap after hearing Patty Cummins’ statements. Unless Steve Smith wishes to do so, I believe Cameron Green will bat first for David Warner. On ESPN’s Around the Wicket Podcast, Clarke stated, “If he does, they might start Steve Smith at number one and Cam Green at number four or number six.
More than that, though, Clarke implies that Smith may break Brian Lara’s record for the highest individual Test score if he accepts the opening role.
“Smith is a really skilled player.” Perhaps it’s the challenge he seeks. Within a year, if he starts, he’ll be the best opener. Clarke continued, Since he has the entire day ahead of him and is so good, don’t be shocked if he breaks Brian Lara’s 400 record.

Smith appears excited about the possibility, despite never having played in a Test match. During the third day of the Sydney Test against Pakistan, he made the following statement to ABC Radio:
“To be honest, I’m glad to reach the summit. If they want to do that, I’m all for it. After this game, I’m sure the selectors, “Ron” (coach Andrew McDonald) and Patty (captain Pat Cummins), will talk, but I’m definitely curious. Definitely,” Smith remarked.
With Mitchell Marsh and Cameron Green in the playing XI, Australia would have flexibility in this possible reorganization. Cameron Green could take up Smith’s current No. 4 spot. The cricket world awaits news on whether Smith will accept the responsibility of beginning the innings in Test cricket as talks between selectors, captain Pat Cummins, and coach Andrew McDonald take place.
