Steve Smith outlines the technical adjustments that enabled him to overcome a temporary slump during the 2023 ODI World Cup.

One of the best cricket players of the current era is thought to be Steve Smith. He is one of the few Australian players that can play spin and pace just as effectively. Consequently, it was anticipated that the right-handed batter will have a significant influence on the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023, which is being held for the first time solely in India. But with just 72 runs in the first four innings of the season, his start did not look good.

Similar to many great batsmen, Steve Smith took his time, practiced in the nets, adjusted his technique, and on Wednesday, in Delhi, he displayed his class by hitting a brilliant 68 off 71 balls against the Netherlands. Smith said that his recovery to form was aided by employing the conventional leg-stump guard and changing from a bottom to a top-handed grip.

“I took a small step back toward the leg stump. My hands are now slightly higher than they have been for the past week. They’ve somewhat decreased for unknown reasons. After Australia defeated the Netherlands by a record 309 runs, Steve Smith was cited by India Today as stating, “I just felt it in the nets yesterday and everything sort of clicked back into place again.”

“A few weeks ago, I thought I was hitting well against India. I felt like I was playing good and really getting back through the ball nicely on a really difficult surface, but after a week I kind of lost it,” Steve Smith added.

I had the impression that I was hitting very well: Steve Smith

In advance of the match against the Netherlands, the 34-year-old stated that he felt well after batting in the nets on Tuesday. During his half-century against the Netherlands, Smith observed that he was getting into good positions and expressed the hope that he would build on this performance in the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023 matches.

“I think the ball that swung back and got me out was one of my great shots. The other was Kagiso Rabada, which was a little dubious. I felt like I was hitting.500 lately. I was happy with my back end after hitting at the nets yesterday since I just needed to get the feel back. I felt comfortable about myself and carried that feeling into today. I hope that trend continues because I felt like I was getting fantastic positions today,” Smith continued.
