By overtaking the renowned Sachin Tendulkar for the most runs scored by a MI batsman in a single IPL season, Suryakumar Yadav has cemented his name in the annals of Mumbai Indians history. At the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur, the right-handed batter accomplished the feat during the match against the Punjab Kings.
However, Suryakumar Yadav eventually overtook the number in 2025.
For 15 years, Tendulkar’s 2010 season total of 618 runs had held the record. That year, the legendary batsman also won the Orange Cap. With 605 runs, he had come close in 2023, but this time, SKY concluded the league stage with 640 runs and has the opportunity to score more as the team is expected to make the playoffs. He therefore became the first batter for the Mumbai Indians to reach 600 runs or more in several IPL seasons.
Mumbai Indians’ highest run total during an IPL season
Player | Runs | Year |
Suryakumar Yadav | 640* | 2025 |
Sachin Tendulkar | 618 | 2010 |
Suryakumar Yadav | 605 | 2023 |
Sachin Tendulkar | 553 | 2011 |
Interestingly, he also became the batter with the most straight 25-plus innings (14) in T20s in the same innings. He outscored Temba Bavuma of South Africa, who recorded 13 of these scores during the 2019–2020 campaign.
In a crucial match against Punjab Kings, where MI was aiming for a top-two finish, the 34-year-old recorded a record-breaking innings. He batted at number three and brilliantly anchored the innings, hitting a 57 off of 38 balls to help MI reach 184/7 in the 20 overs they were given. Suryakumar is now ranked third in the season’s overall run-scorers list after scoring 640* runs in the IPL 2025.
“The wicket presented some difficulties. It was sticky for pacers when we practiced here last night. It was all right against spinners. We expect to defend this, although we lost by 10 to 15 runs [short]. It’s a respectable fighting total, so a little tempo off and seam-up should work. My favourite strokes from the inns are sweeps and flicks, but it was crucial to bat until the very end,” Yadav said on radio following his record-breaking knock.
