In T20Is, Wanindu Hasaranga resigned from his position as Sri Lanka’s captain. Hasaranaga was anticipated to lead Sri Lanka to similar success following his stellar performance in the Lanka Premier League, but the all-rounder was unable to deliver the goods, and Sri Lanka was ousted from the T20 World Cup 2024 group stage.
After head coach Chris Silverwood resigned after the World Cup’s disastrous show, Hasaranga is the second high-profile departure to follow. Sanath Jayasuriya, a former cricket player, has been designated the interim coach for the England series.
Hasaranga, meantime, announced his resignation, stating that although he had worked hard and given it his all, it had not been sufficient. Nevertheless, Hasaranga pledged to help the team whenever necessary despite the resignation.
In his letter of resignation, Wanindu Hasaranga stated, “I will always support and stand by my team and leadership, and I will give Sri Lanka my all as a player.”
In just ten Twenty20 Internationals, he was the national team captain. His aspirations for the future can possibly be revealed by his resignation. In order to play more franchise cricket, many international cricket players are unwilling to accept any significant roles on the national side. Given that Hasaranga has already retired from Test cricket, it remains to be seen what he does going forward.
Hasaranga’s replacement has not yet been announced by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). But the solution is coming soon, as the India series squad is scheduled to be revealed. Dasun Shanaka led the fortress before to Hasaranga, but it is unlikely that the squad would return to him. Kusal Mendis and Charith Asalanka appear to be the favourites right now.

When Hasaranga was not available, Asalanka led the squad during the ODI World Cup in place of Mendis. The three-match Twenty20 International series against India is scheduled to start on July 26 and go through July 29. The Lankan Lions and their neighbours will thereafter engage in a three-match ODI series.
