Sri Lanka hopes to fare better in 2024 after a difficult 2023. The squad will play three ODIs and three T20Is at home against Zimbabwe to kick off their cricket careers in the new year.
Kusal Mendis has been named captain of the final ODI team by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) for the next series against Zimbabwe. Pathum Nissanka, Dasun Shanaka, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Charith Asalanka, and Sahan Arachchige are among the team’s experienced players and up-and-coming stars.
Young bowlers Dunith Wellalage and Pramod Madushan support Jeffrey Vandersay and Dushmantha Chameera, who increase the team’s bowling options. In the event that Wanindu Hasaranga is fit, the spin division will depend on Maheesh Theekshana and Akila Dhananjaya. To provide further depth, the squad also welcomes Dilshan Madushanka, Nuwanindu Fernando, and Janith Liyanage.
SLC will undergo changes following the ICC’s censure.
In response to its recent suspension from the International Cricket Council (ICC) for “political interference,” Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) is preparing to enact a new rule designed to combat outside influence in the halls of power. Presided over by President Ranil Wickremesinghe, a cabinet subcommittee has provided suggestions to rectify governance shortcomings that resulted in the suspension of SLC by the ICC.
The creation of the subcommittee followed an attempt by former Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe to create an interim panel for SLC, which was against ICC member nation governance guidelines. The Under-19 World Cup was moved to South Africa as a result of this suspension. President Wickremesinghe intervened quickly, toppling both Ranasinghe and his replacement, Harin Fernando, and installing Shammi Silva’s elected government once again.
Wickremesinghe announced during this upheaval that he intended to develop a modern sports law to replace the outdated 1973 statute that gave the sports minister the power to form temporary committees. The cabinet committee’s head, Foreign Minister Ali Sabry, disclosed an assessment of SLC’s current structure in order to suggest significant changes. Preventing outside intervention and strengthening the cricket board’s governing structure are the main goals.
