The last time Glenn Maxwell played Test cricket for Australia was in 2017. But the heavy batter has only been able to play white-ball since then. The team for Cricket Australia’s white-ball tour to the United Kingdom, which includes series against Scotland and England, was recently revealed. In December or January, Australia will play India in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, and Maxwell might wear whites for the 2025 red-ball tour to Sri Lanka.
Australia’s World Test Champions 2023–25 cycle includes the two-match Test series. The Sydney Morning Herald predicts that Maxwell may earn a spot in the playing XI because of Australia’s aggressive style of play on the subcontinent. The previous time the Australians went on a six-month tour of Asia, they tied the series against Sri Lanka 1-1, won 1-0 against Pakistan, and lost 0-1 against India.
George Bailey, the selection chair, stated, “We prioritise every Test. We’ll take that throughout the summer and see how the five Tests against India go. Then we’ll make those decisions as to exactly how everyone’s travelling.”
“We do know that the surfaces in Sri Lanka may give you a slightly different composition of your Test side, so it doesn’t usually look exactly the same as what the Test team during the Australian summer might look like,” he continued.

Maxwell has not had much luck following him around in terms of Test appearances. Despite being picked up, he was left out of the starting lineup for the 2022 trip of Sri Lanka. In addition, he was a candidate for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in India in 2023, but he was forced to withdraw when a terrible accident left him with a leg injury. Back in November 2023, he had earlier stated that he would like to participate in the 2025 Sri Lanka trip.
“The mere fact that I was able to participate in the tour of Sri Lanka last year indicates they are still considering me as a possibility. I will always be available to travel there, regardless of how many red-ball cricket matches I played,” Maxwell stated in November 2023.
