Sri Lanka Cricket will introduce the Women's National Super League.

An important turning point for women’s cricket in the nation will be reached when Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) launches the Women’s National Super League (WNSL) in an innovative manner. Both the 50-over and T20 formats will be available in the WNSL, giving young players a chance to show off their abilities and compete at the highest domestic level. This will give selectors a wide pool of cricketers to pick from when selecting players for the national team.

Starting on February 6, four teams—Colombo, Kandy, Dambulla, and Galle—will compete in the middle of the field in the 50-over competition. With sixty players registered to compete, the matches are scheduled to take place in Colombo.

“As they get to compete in the nation’s elite domestic competition, the 50-over tournament, which will start on February 6, is a major elevation for women’s cricket in the country,” a Sri Lanka Cricket media statement said.

It went on, “Players can advance to national recognition by competing and performing well in the Women’s National Super League.”

The 50-over competition will conclude, and then the T20 competition will begin. The 50-over format’s final is scheduled for February 12. The shorter format’s final is scheduled for February 20, with the first round starting on February 15. Regarding the tournament’s structure, each team will play each other once before the top two teams square off in the championship game.

The WNSL’s debut is notable because it highlights Sri Lanka’s commitment to advancing gender equality in cricket. Sri Lanka Cricket seeks to empower female cricket players and develop a pool of talent for the national team by offering a strong local system. Interestingly, the COVID-19 pandemic has halted the national team’s progress; from March 2020 to November 2021, they did not play a single match. In light of this, Sri Lanka Cricket intends to start the competition as soon as possible in order to find more cricket players and maintain an active supply chain.
