Veteran Indian pacer Mohammed Shami has talked candidly about his experience playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) under Australian captain Pat Cummins and his comeback to the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2025. For SRH to remain in the playoff race, they must defeat the Delhi Capitals (DC) on May 5.
After being acquired by SRH for an incredible INR 10 crore, Mohammed Shami, who missed the 2024 Indian Premier League because of an ankle injury, returned this season.
But his return has fallen short of expectations. Shami, who formerly held the Purple Cap in the 2023 Indian Premier League with 28 wickets, has only taken six wickets in nine games at an average of 56.17 and an economy rate of 11.23.
His fitness and form have been criticised due to his recent performance against the Gujarat Titans, against whom he gave up 48 runs in just three overs, and his previous appearance against the Punjab Kings, in which he leaked 74 runs in four overs (the second-worst in IPL history). But Daniel Vettori, the head coach of SRH, has supported him, allaying worries about injuries. In spite of his recent setbacks, the star sprinter thought about joining SRH.
“What was once a 200-run aim now feels like 300 thanks to SRH, which has totally altered my outlook. The game has been redefined by them. Regarding my position, I would like to work with a group that challenges preconceived notions and establishes new standards. I think I’ve joined a solid team, and I’m determined to do my best. At SRH, we’ve also developed a strong bowling team with a reliable pace attack and top-notch spinners to support it. “Those who believe that SRH is just about batting are mistaken,” he stated exclusively on JioHotstar’s special series “Gen Gold.” “Overall, our bowling is much more balanced now.”
Regarding Cummins, Mohammed Shami commended the Australian’s leadership abilities and disclosed that, as a bowler’s captain, he understands the pressure and brings a wealth of knowledge to the table.
“In leadership, composure is essential. A composed captain can inspire his team to perform at their highest level. It’s critical to understand each player’s potential, and Pat Cummins excels at it. He has years of experience as a captain and is accustomed to handling both young and international players,” he stated.
He also emphasised how crucial the IPL is as a stage for up-and-coming talent.
“The IPL is a fantastic venue for young people to display their abilities, potential, and character. Seeing them rise up is encouraging because it demonstrates how promising Indian cricket’s future is. Talent is flowing through our league in plenty,” he continued.
Meanwhile, the home game between SRH and DC is crucial for both teams. SRH is mathematically alive despite being on the verge of elimination with just six points from ten games. They might have a remote chance if they win on Monday. After a mid-season slump in performance, Delhi, with 12 points, is likewise in a tough place.
