In the longest format, Spencer Johnson has stated that he would like to represent Australia. His older teammate Mitchell Starc has been playing well lately; he was particularly effective in the second Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024–25 match against India. In Adelaide, Starc took six wickets in the opening innings. Johnson, who made his debut for his country in 2023 against South Africa, has his sights set on red-ball cricket after being influenced by Starc’s antics.
After his great performances for the team, the 28-year-old recently inked a deal with the Brisbane Heat in the Big Bash League. With this contract deal, he will remain with the Heat for a minimum of four seasons.
In the meantime, Spencer Johnson acknowledged that his desire to make his Test debut was influenced for a long time by the likes of Adam Gilchrist and Ricky Ponting in addition to Starc.
I consider Starcy to be the standard after seeing him. Being even close to what he is is what I’m aiming for. He has endured for a very long time. I’m trying to figure out how he accomplishes a couple things, and he’s always willing to respond and share some advice. Yahoo Sports cited Johnson as saying, “He sent me a photo of how he straps his ankles and toes.”
“You want to see Ricky Ponting, Matthew Hayden, and Adam Gilchrist on the screen when you initially start playing the game. Baggy Green is what you’re after. With some (excellent) performances, and hopefully it won’t be too far away if I can get the physique right,” he continued.
In related news, Australia levelled the series 1-1 at the Adelaide Oval after losing the opening match of the current Test series against India in Perth. The hosts will now try to maintain the momentum from the first day of the Test on Saturday, December 14 when they travel to Brisbane for the third Test.
