Quick left arm After being ruled out of the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) season owing to a back injury, Spencer Johnson‘s ambitions of representing Australia in the T20 World Cup early next year have been severely damaged. Since the Indian Premier League (IPL), Johnson has not played. At first, he thought his back pain was a recurrence of a prior disc problem.
While getting ready for the July T20I trip of the West Indies, the 29-year-old experienced more discomfort; scans ultimately revealed a stress fracture. As he waited for the injuries to heal, he then endured months of therapy, which included swimming and pilates. He was optimistic about making a comeback for the upcoming BBL season after a follow-up scan in October. The title-winning fast bowler for the Brisbane Heat, however, has been ruled out for the duration of the competition, the team said Wednesday.
“Spencer Johnson is still healing from a back injury, and happily, things are getting better.
However, he is unable to play in the BBL this season due to the most recent timeline for his comeback to play. According to ESPNcricinfo, Terry Svenson, the CEO of the Brisbane Heat, stated, “We’re all sad for Spencer, but we’ll give him continued support as he continues to recover.”
Spencer Johnson is unlikely to recuperate in time to compete for a spot in the final 15-member squad because Australia’s first T20 World Cup match is set for February 11. Mitchell Starc just retired from T20I cricket, and the left-arm quick was seen to be a possible long-term replacement.
But with a pace attack that includes Josh Hazlewood, Nathan Ellis, Ben Dwarshuis, and Xavier Bartlett, Australia has won three of their previous four Twenty20 International series while Spencer Johnson is away. The team is settling in nicely, and if healthy, Pat Cummins might make a comeback for the competition.
Spencer Johnson, who resides in Adelaide and has a domestic deal with South Australia, will continue his recuperation there. Johnson has registered for the 2019 IPL auction at the second-highest base price of INR 150 lakh despite the setback. After being discharged by the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) after the previous season, he is still hopeful that he would be healthy and available for the 2025 campaign if selected.
“I’ve had plenty of expert support from everyone involved in the process and I am very confident that I will be back and doing what I love as soon as possible,” Spencer Johnson stated.
