India entered the 2023 ODI World Cup final versus Australia in Ahmedabad as the favorites after winning their previous 10 games in a row. The Pat Cummins-led team went on to win their sixth global championship in history, but the Men in Blue suffered a crushing defeat by six wickets. While the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma are scheduled to return in the forthcoming two-match series against South Africa, they have chosen to take a vacation from international cricket.
Before that, questions about captain Rohit Sharma’s opinions about the November 19 final were posed.
For the first time since the setback, the 36-year-old talked to the media. He said that everyone found it difficult to move on following the loss and that it was important to find a way to look forward. In light of the Test series against the Proteas, he said that the players have received a lot of encouragement from the fans.
“You expect us to win the World Cup because of the way we performed there. For that cup, we put in a lot of labor. In the end, there were several things we struggled with. Following such a loss, it is difficult. You have to, however, figure out how to let go and look ahead. The outside world was a great source of encouragement. Personally, that inspired me. I’m hitting as well as I possibly could as a batter. I’ll be excited about whatever is ahead of me, Rohit Sharma stated at the news conference.
In his funny avatar, Rohit Sharma also said that the team has been working incredibly hard lately and that they should all be rewarded for their efforts. As a result, they are hoping to win the series against the Temba Bavuma-led team. The opener went on to say that while he’s not sure whether it will ease his World Cup heartache, he’s hoping to become the first Indian skipper to win a Test series in South Africa.
It would be a huge accomplishment if we could win the series because we have never done so here. Achieving this would be a good thing, though I’m not sure whether it can totally take away the hurt of the World Cup loss. We at least partially deserve this because we’ve worked so hard,” he continued.
