For the forthcoming two-match Test series against Zimbabwe, which will start on June 28 at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo, South Africa has announced a 16-man squad. Temba Bavuma will captain the team, and the red-ball configuration will include a number of new players.
After their historic victory over Australia at Lord’s in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final 2025, which was their first ICC title in 27 years, the series represents a new chapter for the Proteas.
Pace leaders Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen, as well as Aiden Markram, who was named Player of the Match in the WTC Final, have been rested for the forthcoming Test series. In order to provide opportunities for the younger generation, Tristan Stubbs, Ryan Rickelton, Senuran Muthusamy, and Dane Paterson have all been granted a break.
David Bedingham, Corbin Bosch, Tony de Zorzi, Keshav Maharaj, Lungi Ngidi, Wiaan Mulder, and Kyle Verreynne are among the players from the WTC winning team who will still be travelling to Zimbabwe. Young prospect Dewald Brevis, who is anticipated to make his Test debut, and wicketkeeper-batter Matthew Breetzke have also been included. Zubayr Hamza rejoins the team after playing in eight Test matches.
The bowling attack was bolstered by the pace revelation Kwena Maphaka, while 19-year-old Lhuan-dre Pretorius is expected to receive his first Test call-up. Lesego Senokwane, a middle-order batsman, also merits a spot in the team. To add depth in the middle order, the all-rounders Codi Yusuf and Prenelan Subrayen were selected in the draft.
The Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo will host the first Test match from June 28 to July 2 and the second from July 6 to July 10.
